A bright, healthy smile can take years off your face and add confidence to your bearing. But as time passes, you may find that your teeth are becoming dull or discolored. Your tooth enamel becomes more porous and pervious to stains, both extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains lie on the surface of your teeth. Intrinsic stains lie within cracks in your enamel and dentin (the layer below your tooth enamel). Both are resistant to brushing and over-the-counter products and require professional dental whitening agents to eradicate them.
Over-the-counter whitening products can remove some surface stains, but if you attempt to use them repeatedly, or overuse them, to eliminate resilient stains, the chemicals in the products can make your gums and teeth sensitive, even to the point of pain. Professional-grade dental whitening agents are prescribed at strengths high enough to remove stains quickly, without harming your gums or teeth.
Dr. Sahar Yaftaly offers the Philips Zoom Night White/Day White home bleaching kit to patients. We recommend that you call our office and make an appointment with Dr. Yaftaly if you wish to brighten your smile.
What Is Involved in Dental Whitening?
Dr. Yaftaly will examine your teeth and gums to make certain that whitening is appropriate. The procedure for dental whitening is done by you, at home. Zoom offers a home bleaching kit, for a more gradual whitening of your teeth over two weeks. After an initial exam, Dr. Yaftaly will take impressions to create a custom whitening tray for you, adjusting the prescription strength if you want more dramatic results. You will be given instructions on how to use the tray (which will fit your teeth and allow the whitening gel to come in full contact with the surfaces of your teeth). After two weeks, you’ll return to see Dr. Yaftaly for a final check-up.
Benefits of Dental Whitening
