Losing teeth can create problems that range from the self-consciousness arising from an imperfect smile to deteriorating bone in the jaw that can lead to further tooth loss. Fortunately, multiple options are available to replace missing teeth.
Dental implants have been established as a highly effective replacement for missing teeth. They function more like natural teeth than any other replacement option. With dental implants, you can regain the ability to chew food and speak clearly, protect your teeth and bone, and smile openly once again.
What Are Dental Implants?
There are three parts to dental implants. The first is a titanium post that is surgically placed into your jaw, where it is allowed to fuse with the bone. The second part, the abutment, allows the third part, the crown, to be attached to the post. The crown is shaped and polished so that it mimics your natural teeth and provides you with a beautiful smile once more.
Whether you require one implant or several, Dr. Josie Dovidio will consult with you about your options and schedule an examination to confirm the health of your gums and jawbone. After your examination, Dr. Dovidio will refer you to a surgeon, who will perform the implant surgery. After the implant has fused to the bone, Dr. Dovidio will create a crown that will blend in with your neighboring teeth.
You may wear dentures to replace your lost teeth, but dentures (particularly the lower plates) are known to move about in the mouth, causing difficulty in speaking and eating. Should you have enough bone left in the jaw, you may prefer to have an implant-supported denture.
Care of an implant-supported denture is much like taking care of a regular denture; it must be cleaned daily and should be taken out of the mouth at night to allow the gums to rest.
Conditions for Dental Implants
You should have healthy gums and enough jawbone to be a candidate for implants. Dr. Dovidio will evaluate your physical and oral health and discuss any conditions that need to be resolved or under control, such as tobacco use, diabetes, heart disease, or radiation treatments to the head and neck. With implants, you need to commit to reliable oral hygiene and see Dr. Dovidio habitually for check-ups and cleanings.
Dental implants can mean the difference between preserving your natural teeth for years and facing dental problems in later years due to tooth loss and jawbone deterioration. Contact Dr. Dovidio if you want to discuss your options for receiving implants or an implant-supported denture. We want to help you hold onto your smile.
